I've started this blog to write about the books I read for a couple of reasons. Firstly, so I can remember what on earth I have read. This is a perennial problem for me - I can usually remember all the details about a book, without remembering the author or the title. Secondly, so I can discuss the merits of the novel and its characters, plots and themes as I read them and after I have completed them.
Hopefully it's a success!
I've really enjoyed reading this blog. I feel inspired to read the Paton novel, but can't bring myself to read a detective story, especially one with idiosyncratic dialogue (surely it's best to allow the reader to hear the characters' accents in their head without spelling it out in a patronising manner?), even if the author is J.K.Rowling.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Do read 'Cry, The Beloved Country,' it's absolutely superb and I cannot recommend it enough. The dialogue in 'Cuckoo's Calling' is a massive bugbear of mine. I did expect to dislike it, but it was enjoyable despite my best efforts to disdain it. Paton's novel is leagues ahead of it though.
